Place values show you how to read a number. As an example, let's look at the number 345. To find the place value, count the columns from right to left. Remember: A place can not be bigger than 9. When you are not using decimals, the column farthest right is the ones column. There are 5 ones in 345. The next column over is called the tens column. This shows that there are 4 tens in 345. The next column over is hundreds and as you can see there are 3 hundreds in 345. If you kept going with a larger number, the next columns would be: Thousands, ten thousands and so forth.
