2+2=4. This is an example of a very basic addition problem. We start with ** (two dots) and add it with ** (two more). These numbers/dots are called addends. You add them to get a sum ( addition answer) of **** ( four dots). ** + ** = **** or 2+2=4. It is really just puting 2 or more numbers together and see what they are when combined.

Once you have mastered the above, you can start working on "carrying". This is when a place column comes out to be more than one digit. An example of this is 19+3=22. When this problem is calculated, the ones column equals 12. However, all columns can only have 1 digit. So... take the 1 from 12(the 1 equals ten so now you "carry" it over to the tens column). Take this 10 and add it to the ten from 19. Now you have 2 tens, or 20. Then, put the tens column (2) and the ones column(also 2) together. This comes out to be 22.
