Rainforest mammals are warm blooded. Almost all
of them have fur, and only a few species don’t. There are many primates
along with tigers, otters, bats, and many more.
The night monkey is scientifically named the Douroucouli. It is the only nocturnal
monkey in the world. They eat fruit, leaves, and some insects. They have extremely
large brown eyes always alert, ready to climb and leap. Their eyes help them
to see in the dark.
The Howler Monkey’s howl can be heard from 2 miles away. They usually
howl every morning the way a rooster does. They also howl in a slightly different
way when it comes to mating season. The female howler monkey gives birth to
about 3 babies a litter.
The Tayra lives alone or in pairs of 2 or 3. They are active in the day and
in the night, and they live in hollow tree trunks and branches. They eat fruit,
small rodents, and insects. Females have 2 to 4 babies a litter. They live
up to 10 years if they are healthy.
The Bengal Tiger is a carnivore that eats deer, wild pigs, young elephants,
and buffalo. The female has 3 to 4 cubs in a litter. They are about 5 inches
long at birth. They live to be about 15 to 20 years old.
The flying fox eats nectar at night. The female flying fox has 1 or 2 babies
at a time. They also eat fruit.
The Aye-aye is about the size of a large racoon. They are a part of the lemur
family, which are primates. Many people hunt the aye-aye, so they are slowly
becoming endangered. The aye-aye eats fruit and vegetables.
The Bush Baby is amongst the small species of primate, looking like a chinchilla
the size of o chipmunk with large eyes. They are nocturnal and have 1 or 2
babies a litter. They eat insects, and little fruit.
The jaguar eats fish and hunts them by the amazon or other rivers in the rainforest.
They weigh up to 250 pounds. The female has 2 to 4 cubs a litter and jaguars
are endangered.
The Margay is a small feline with humongous eyes. They are completely nocturnal
and they hunt and eat small monkeys. Poachers hunt the Margay for the extraordinary
pattern of fur.
The pigmy Marmoset is only about 3 inches long, but very fluffy. It is the
smallest primate in the entire world. They eat fruit, and the female has exactly
2 babies twice a year.
The spider monkey eats fruit and nuts. It uses its legs, arms, and tail to
swing through the trees.
The fruit bat hangs upside down. This is called “roosting”. They
eat fruit, insects, and occasionally dead mice. Females have 1 to 3 babied
at a time, and they have a keen sense of smell, just like a dog.
The orangutang lives up to 80 to even over 100 years old if healthy! They
eat fruit insects and some plants. The females have 2 to three babies at a
time.
Some rainforest mammals are going extinct, some are over populating the rainforest.
But no matter the shape or size, they are mammals and the rainforest is their
home.
