David Livingstone was born more than one hundred fifty years ago, on March 19th 1813, in Blantyre Works, Scotland. David was trying to bring Christianity to Africa. He had a medical degree from Anderson's College in Glasgow. While he was in college, David was planning to become a medical missionary to China. He wanted to help those caught in the "opium war".
After he met a well spoken, Dr. Robert Moffat, he had decided to sail to Africa instead. Dr. Robert Moffat spoke about a region of central Africa where the gospel had never been preached. In 1840 the London Missionary Society sailed on the George to Africa. (David had married Dr. Moffat's daughter, Mary.) During the last trip to Africa a lot of the missionaries fell ill.
One of the most devastating events for him was when his beloved, heroic companion died. This made David deeply sad when Mary died of fever at Shupanga.
