Layers of the Rainforest

There are four layers in the rainforest. The top layer is the Emergent layer. It contains large trees above the Canopy layer. These trees get all of the sun and wind of the rainforest.

The second highest layer is the Canopy layer. It is sixty to ninety feet above the ground. The branches of the trees are mostly covered with other kinds of plants and connected with vines. Ninety percent of the animals in the rainforest live in this layer of the rainforest looking for brighter light.

The Understory is right below the Canopy layer. It is a dark place because it only gets fifteen percent of the sun light. Only plants that have adapted to the dark live down in this layer.

The Forest Floor is the smallest and lowest. Less than two percent of sunlight reaches this area. Not very much animals live here either they mostly die because there is nothing to eat.
