There are many endangered species in the rainforest. Some of these animals are: tiger, asiatic lion & sloths.
The tiger is one of the most endangered animals. At one time, there were seven subspecies of tigers, today there are only four subspecies. The Bali tiger, Panthera tigeris balica, disappeared around 1952. The Java tiger, Panthera tigeris balica sodaica, might be extinct today. At one time the Java tiger was very abundant on the Pacific islands. However, because many hunters killed tigers for their fur. By 1955 the population of the Java tiger was estimated to only 4 sub specimen which were in a reserve. Today no java tigers are in a reserve anywhere.
A few Asiatic lion, Panthera leo persica, still live on the Kathiawar Peninsula of India. The Asiatic lion used to live in several areas of the world; now they only live in Africa.
The Orangutang, Pongo pygmaeus, lives only in the tropical rainforest of Sumatra and Borneo. Logging is the major threat to Orangutangs. There are only about 4,000 species left in the wild. Another threat is that they are being captured as laboratory animals.
Sloths, Bradypus triactylus, are found in South and Central America. A Sloth is a slow moving tree-dwelling mammal, usually about 41 to 74 cm. long. It covered with grayish-brown short hair. The flat, faced animal has large eyes, a snub nose, and rudimentary ears. They spend their entire existence hanging suspended from the boughs of trees, with the legs and face turned upward. Sloths are endangered because their habitat is being destroyed.
These are just some of the endangered animals of the rainforest.
