To most people, the desert is a hot, sandy and dangerous place. With it’s large mounds of sand called “dunes” and it’s poisonous animals. But the desert has many unknown facts.
Such as that is does rain in the desert. It stays dry for
long periods of time, but when it rains it can rain for days at a time. It
can and will rain up to ten inches a year. It only rains at the beginning
of spring.
There are many different types of deserts. They are not all sandy with cacti.
Some of them have dry sand that would burn your feet. Others have nothing
but large rocks. Some desert even have large cities in them. Like Salt Lake
City in Utah. It is mostly in the desert and a lot of people live in it.
Some deserts have deadly names that would probably keep you from going there.
Such as, Funeral Peak, Death Valley and Badwater Basin. These desert names
are named for different reasons. Like cows or horses falling off of cliffs,
people getting lost in valleys, or animals dying from drinking bad water.
Just like it is hard for people to survive in the desert, it is also hard
for animals to survive. Most of the animals like, mice, snakes, foxes, etc.
stay under ground all in the daytime and come out only at night when it is
not so hot.
In different deserts there will be different animals, plants, etc. The plants
and animals have grown immune to it in a way that would be difficult for humans.
So the desert is probably not a place that you would like to live. The desert
is a very dangerous place.
