Polar Bears

When you hear the words polar bear most people think of a cuddly teddy bear. But that's not true at all unless you are in a toy store.

Polar bears are large white bears that live in cold climates. Unfotunatley there are only 22,000-27,000 left. About 15,000 live in Canada.

Polar bears mainly eat seals and walrus pups. When it is dry and they are stuck on land they will eat rodents, bird eggs, berries and most anything that is edible.

Polar bears are large animals. they can weigh from 1,100 to 1,320 lbs. They can grow to be about 4 ft. when on all fours. When standing an their hind feet they can be anywhere from 8 1/4 ft. to 18 ft.!

When polar bear cubs are born the mother is still in hibernation. The mother can have 1-4 cubs. Usually they have 2. 6 out of 10 polar bears die their first year of life. This usually happens because of starvaton, diseases and injury. Sometimes an inexperienced mother will kll her young. Mothers try to steer clear of of males because they will also kill the young.

If you were looking for a polar bear9wich would not be the best idea) look for a large stout white bear. If it has young don't go anywhere near it. You may think they are harmless but you have to remember they are still wild animals. (Even if they are cute!)
