As hard as it would be to adapt to living in the desert, plants have done it. They have adapted to living without water, living in hot weather, and much more. The plants in the desert have adapted much like the animals of the desert. Reward the camel, it can go without water for a very long time.
The plants that have learned to adapt to a dry environment are called xerophytes. They alert their physical structure to save up water for the dry weather. Xerophytes are a lot like cacti, they can store water. Since there is very rarely water in the desert, they need to save the water so that they have enough until the next time it rains.
When the flowers do bloom, they are very beautiful. The most common plant of the desert is the cactus. Cacti plants need very little water. That is how it survives in the desert. It has spikes that protect it from birds that try to peck it open to get the water inside of it. The cactus can be very pretty, in the spring it blooms all different colors of flowers such as, red, yellow, purple and pink.
There is also a plant called a Yucca plant. Yacca plants have very bright and beautiful flowers. Although it is very pretty, Yucca plants have very strong leaves. The Indians use them to make baskets.
There is a tree called a Joshua tree
that is very closely related to the Yucca plant. They are tall with thick
trunks. They have rough bark covering the trunks. They have greenish/white
flowers that grow in bunches and smell good.
Although all of the plants trees and bushes are pretty, the have to go through
a lot to survive. All of them have a water storage system that is special
to them. They also all have to protect themselves against animals that want
their water. There are many plants of the desert and they are all unique.
