The Australian Pelican and the American White Pelican are both birds that hunt fish, but they use different strategies to catch their food.
The Australian White Pelican flies over the water and sticks it's head into the water, scooping up the fish out of the water.
The American White Pelican forms a line with the other hunters and chase schools of fish into the shallow waters, and then scoops them up.
Two of the worlds pelicans, Dalmatian and Spot Billed, are endangered because of the loss of habitat in Southern Asia.
The Brown Pelican is endangered because of the pesticide DDT, used in the 50's and 60's. The Farmers put DDT(a chemical) on their crops to keep the bugs off, but when it rained, all of the DDT washed off, and it flowed to the streams. The fish would get DDT into their system, it didn't effect the fish because they only got a little DDT, but the Pelican eats so many fish that they would get a large amount of DDT in their bodies. The DDT doesn't affect them, but it does affect their eggs. When they lay their eggs, the egg shells aren't strong enough to protect the chick inside. This leads to very few chicks being born. DDT is now a banned chemical.
