On March 20, 1954, Louis Sachar was born in East Meadow, N.Y. In college,
Louis took a class on how to become a teacher’s aide; he took this class
because it sounded easy. It ended up to be his favorite class. It also led
him to write children’s books like, Holes, There’s a Boy in the
Girls’ Bathroom, Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes, etc.
Louis’ first book was called, Sideways Stories from Wayside School. Each book that he has written has taken him about a year and a half to write, and once he starts a book he doesn’t talk to anybody about it until it’s finished. Most of his books came from stories from his childhood. He also got the ideas for some of his stories from his daughter and wife.
Sachar currently lives in Texas. He says that he got the idea for the book, Holes, when he moved to Texas. It was so hot in Texas that he decided to write a book about a boy suffering in the heat. Holes took him eighteen months to write, the same amount time that Stanley Yelnats had to stay in the correctional facility.
