In Island of the Blue Dolphins, a young girl named
Karana and her younger brother, Ramo, get left behind on their island while
their people sail away to a new world. Now they must learn how to survive on
their own. When Ramo is killed by the wild dogs who live on the island, Karana
vows to kill the wild dogs leader. When she shot him, she hurt him badly enough
that she could take him home and tame him. She named him Rontu.
18 years later, a ship comes and rescues her. She learns that her people never
reached land, that the ship sank somewhere out in the sea, and nobody knows
where.
What did you think of this book? I thought Karana was really brave to be
all alone on the island with only her brother. It must of been hard, and even
harder when her brother died. Karana was really brave.
