Jean Craighead George was born in Washington D.C. and raised in a family of naturalists. She centered her life on nature and writing. On weekends she and her family went camping in the woods near her home. As a girl her first pet was a turkey vulture.
Jean has 2 brothers frank and John. When they were young, their dad would take them out into the wilderness and teach them about different trees, plants, insects, flowers and things like that. They also learned about different edible things in nature that they could eat and not eat.
Jean has 3 kids. Twig, Craig and Luke. Craig and Luke are environmental scientists and her other son Twig, writes children's books just like his mother.
When her children were growing up, she brought in wild animals so her children can learn about them. She brought in many animals such as birds, weasels, racoons, etc. Jean has been writing almost all of her life.
She has written over 100 books, obtained many awards and has worked for the Washington post and was a member of the White Press Corps. She has had many goals in her life and accomplished them.
