The Maya were one of the best known civilizations of
Mesoamerica. Starting in the Yucatan from around 2600 BC to 250 AD they
expanded their boundaries around southern Mexico, Guatemala,
northern Belize,
and Western
Honduras. Building of earlier
inventions and ideas of their earlier civilization the Olmec the Maya
developed high interest in astronomy, calendrical systems, math, and
hieroglyphic writing. The Maya were famous for their highly decorated
architecture like temples, pyramids, palaces, and observatories, all
of these were built without metal tools, beasts of burden, or the wheel.
Farming was another thing they were skilled at. They were also equally
skilled as weavers and potters, and cleared routes through jungles and
swamps to foster extensive trade with distant peoples.
