The Maya Gods,Goddesses,and Sacrifice
The Maya culture had lots of different things they did that we don't do now. One of the things that they did was to worshiped god, goddesses, and sacrifice (to the gods or goddesses).
The ways they would worship the gods or goddesses would to sacrifice people or other living things. The ways they would sacrifice humans to the gods would to play game. The rules of the game would be to hit a hard rubber ball in a hole and the losers would be sacrificed. All the sacrifices or games would be held at a place the Mayan called "Tikal, city of the dead", or if there was no game happening they would choose weather to tie the person or animal up and put them in a room and let them die, tie them up and chop the person or animal's head off or, put them in a bag and hit them with weapons or throw the person or animal off a cliff in to the water. There was at least 20 gods. Here are the names of some of the gods and goddesses The god Itzamná the god of all, Kinich Ahau god of the sun, Chac god of rain, Yum Kaax god of corn, Kukulcán god of wind, Ek Chuah god of war, Xaman Ek god of the North Star, Ix Chel goddess of childbirth, Ix Tab goddess of suicide, Ah Puch god of Death Manik god of Human sacrifice, and Bolontiku god of the lower world. There was names for the god which are kind of like nicknames like the god of warfarenickname was the Jaguar god. The Maya named each god a nickname and jaguar was the most common. But the two most important gods were the two creators of the Maya Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca. The Maya based one half of the thanks to the gods and one half to the creators. After some one died if there status was high they would be dressed up in beautiful textiles and if your status was low than you wouldn't be dressed in beautiful textiles. Quetzalcoatl's(the god of nature and one of the creators) name means feathered serpent, and the temple Quetzalcoatlis at a Mayan town called Teotihuacán. The way the Maya would worship the rain god would to sacrifice children by drowning the children in a well. If the sacrifice was with a weapon the weapon would usually be a knife that kind of looked like a fish and a human. The Maya would sacrifice people to the gods but also if they caught some one that was not a Mayan person they would sacrifice them for no reason or sacrifice them to the gods or goddesses. The Maya had lots of gods and goddesses, but other civilization after the Maya took some of the gods.
