Resources for Help Medications are used by doctors to treat drug dependence because it eases craving. Methadone is a drug that helps people stop craving heroin. Even though doctors think that methadone can be beneficial it is also addictive. Doctors believe that you can really profit from treatment in groups with other people who have used drugs. In these groups, other drug abusers share their experiences with one another and learn from each other. Dulifram which is also known as Antabuse is a drug used to treat alcoholism. This medication is used when a person drinks alcohol; it makes the person suffer symptoms like the flu for several hours. Nicotine
patches help relieve craving for smokers. The American Medical Association
(AMA) first tested nicotine patches to see how it affected people. Nicotine
patches and gum have become available without a prescription over the years, but
they haven’t helped smokers quit for a long period of time. The product may
have worked better in previous years because doctors prescribed the product for the
patient, and they told the patient how to use the
product. Doctors also recommend attending counseling while using nicotine skin patches.
Most smokers are able to quit on their own but some need professional help. Many
attend clinics where they can learn how to not think about smoking and not to
stress about smoking. Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A)
is one organization that has helped many people who abuse alcohol. Alcoholics
Anonymous is an organization that helps people world wide deal with alcohol
issues. They share their stories with other people with the same problems. This
organization was founded in 1935. There are about 85,000 groups in the United
States, Canada, and about 130 other countries. These groups
are not medical or religious, it’s only about personal recovery. Treatment
tries to help alcoholics stop drinking and stay sober. Individual psychotherapy
and treatment communities are other counseling methods. Behavioral treatments
are participating in A.A. and counseling. Sometimes drug abuse treatment
doesn’t work. Some people have to fight very strong cravings many years after
they stop taking drugs. A person who wants to successfully fight drugs needs to
personally want to stop. Close relationships with their family and friends often
helps them want to stop. Treatments and medications are two important medicines that have worked and helped some alcoholics. One medication is benzodiazepines. They are used in the first few days after the person has stopped drinking. Another medication is naltrexone, which is used longer with counseling. This medication also helps stop alcohol craving. |
