In other parts of the United States, Caucasians are broken down into individual ethnic groupings, and traditions are found among Caucasians which do have a strong social meaning. However, with the exception of the Portuguese, separate Caucasian identities do not play a significant role in the social makeup of Hawaii.
The military has had a strong influence on Hawaii. In present times, the composition for the military forces in Hawaii has changed. In the past, the men were not allowed to bring their families with them. Families are now able to accompany the soldiers. This population lives in a self-sufficient military installation. They have post exchanges, service clubs, support services and recreational facilities. They also have a total health system with the largest hospital facilities in the Pacific Basin. Not all the military families live on base and military housing, some have drifted in the local Hawaii community. Their children attend local schools and families participate in activities and social interchange in the nonmilitary community. Additionally, a large number of retired military personnel decided to settle in Hawaii.
Pearl Harbor is a military base on the island of Oahu.Caucasian military have a large influence on the mainland culture, popular music, talk shows, radio stations and special current social events. On the island of Oahu, Pearl Harbor, Fort Shafter, Schofield and Hickam Air Force Bases are part of the American Armed Forces.
In 1959, Hawaii entered the state of the union. John A. Burns, a Caucasian politician, became governor. He respected both Caucasians and non-Caucasians. He was brought up in the community of Kalihi, which is a lower-middle class section of Honolulu. He was also a police detective.

Hawaii's beautiful beaches attract many to the islands.Presently, many Caucasians from the Mainland come to reside in Hawaii because of its beautiful climate and atmosphere. There are a growing number of retirement homes, which attract people from the Mainland.
Since statehood, a large number of companies with headquarters or branches in other states on the mainland have opened sections in Hawaii. Therefore, many Caucasians have come to fill in the new positions created by the move. Others come for educational reasons, whether it be as students or university faculty.
Caucasians have established themselves as professionals in Hawaii. They are physicians, lawyers and other specialists. They have a huge dominance in Hawaii's economic sector. For example, the two major newspapers in Hawaii are under Caucasian control.
