There are five types of tigers. They are found in Asia, India, and Russia. The largest is the Siberian tiger which can be as long as a station wagan. It can weigh up to 650 pounds. The smallest subspecies is found in the jungles Indonesia. Tigers have orange, black, and striped fur. This enables them to blend into their enviroment. Each tiger has its very own pattern which is like human's fingerprints. Tigers are an endangerd species.
Tigers use their front paws to bring down prey. The tiger uses his claws on its front paw to capture prey. They also use their claws for scratching trees to mark their terrirtory. Tigers are capable of stalking prey up to thirty minutes. This shows how patient they are. When tigers succeed in catching prey they will use their sharp teeth and jaws to grab the animal by its neck and suffocate it. Their tongues resemble sandpaper which helps to scrap off the last bits of meat of the dead prey. Their diets consist mainly on wild boar, deer, sambar, cattle, and goats. They like to hunt alone preferably between sunset and sunrise. They can travel as far as twenty miles a night in search of prey. They eat between thirty and forty pounds of meat on a given night. A tiger must make a kill a least once a week. They have about a ten to twenty percent success rate in making a successful kill.
The female tiger is capable of having up to seven cubs in a liter. Newborn cubs weigh between one and a half to three pounds. Once their eyes open their vision isn't good for a couple of months. She can produce a litter every two years. She can have another litter right away whenever a litter dies.Since tigers hunt alone a mother tiger usually only has two cubs to survive. Tiger cubs born in zoos survive better because food is provided. Baby's are born after fourteen to fifteen weeks gestation. The mother is forced to leave them alone for periods of time in order to hunt. The cubs begin to eat meat at around two years of age. The father doesn't help bring up the cubs in any way. Tiger cubs are not ready to hunt on their own until they reach the age of two.
In order for the tiger to survive it needs large areas, water, and adquate prey. They need plenty of vegetation cover. Male tigers defend their territories from other males in order to protect their food supply. His territory must allow females in order to mate. She must have a territory with prey that is large enough to keep herself and her cubs fed. The females territories are smaller than males. The Bengal's scientific name is Panthera tigris tigris. They live in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, and Nepal.Their is average weight for females is between 221 and 353 pounds and a male is between 419 and 569 pounds. The average length for a female is bewtween 7 "11" and 8"7". The average length for a male is between 8"8" and 10"2".They prey on Antelope, buffalo, cattle, deer, and pigs.Their gestation period is about 103 days. They have around one to five cubs per litter.Cub's join their mother in hunting after 8 weeks, and after 6 months they themselves learn to hunt.
