Diablo, the giant manta ray, is trying to get the black pearl back.
Ramon tried to act like the didn't have the pearl when the people
of La Paz ask him about the pearl that he found. When Ramon's father
first saw the black pearl that Ramon brought home he did not think
that it was real. He thought that the pearl was made up of more than
one pearl glued together. Ramon told his father that he found the
pearl and that it was a real pearl. |

| In
this chapter the people in La Paz were curious about the pearl They
followed Ramon, his father, and the pearl in a parade. Ramon's father
decided that the pearl had some flaws on it. He took a sharp knife
tool and shaved off the flaws. Ramon was afraid that his father would
ruin the pearl. His father did not ruin the pearl. He gave it back
to Ramon and called it The Pearl of the Universe. |

| Ramon's father tries to sell the pearl,
but the other dealers did not have the money to buy it. The dealers
tried to buy the pearl together, but they still did not have enough
money. Ramon gave the pearl to the church. Father Gallardo took the
pearl and put it in the hands of a stature that is called the Lady-of-the-Sea.

| Ramon and his father decide to give the
Pearl of Heaven to the church. Father Gallardo was going to place
the giant black pearl in the hands of a statue calle the young Madonna.
All of the villagers and people who lived near La Paz came to the
ceremony so that they could see the great pearl. The townspeople put
the Madonna statue on a carrier and brought it down to the water so
that Father Gallardo could bless the pearling fleet. Ramon's father
wanted to go and search for more giant pearls in Soto Luzon's lagoon.
Ramon did not think that Soto Luzon would let him. |

11 |
| The night after the ceremony Ramon's father
sent the pearling fleet to teh Isla Cerralvo. A storm like a hurricane
blew into La Paz. Everyone was afraid for the fleet because many of
the men in the village were on the ships. All of the villagers stayed
on the beach hoping to get a glimpse of the fleet as it sailed home.
Suddenly a man was walking up the beach. It was the Sevillano, Gaspar
Ruiz. He told the villagers that the fleet was lost. |

12 |
| There were 32 men on the boats of Ramon's
father's fleet. The only one to live through the storm was the Sevillano.
Ramon puts the pearl inside his shirt and looked for a boat to use.
He wanted to row out to sea and put the black pearl back where he
found it. It must really belong to the Manta Diablo, and he thought
that the black pearl was giving the village bad luck. He blamed himself
for the sinking of the fleet. Ramon began to believe that the Manta
Diablo was real. |
