13 |
| Ramon
paddled back to the lagoon with the pearl so that he could give it
back to the Manta Diablo. He heard a sound behind him and it was the
Sevillano in another canoe holding a knife. He told Ramon that he
had gone the church to steal the pearl too. He also said to Ramon
that he should give him the pearl. So, he put out his hand like he
was going to give him the pearl, but he threw it into the lagoon towards
the cave. The Sevillano dove after the pearl and got it. |

14 |
| The
Sevillano made Ramon go with him in his boat. Ramon had to paddle
and the Sevillano was lazy. Ramon wanted to guide the boat, but the
Sevillano did not trust him. He thought that Ramon might paddle back
to shore or kill him when he was asleep. The Manta Diablo showed up
and followed them. They stopped at on an island to rest and think
about the manta ray. |

15 |
| Ramon
told the Sevillano that he believed in the Manta Diablo. The Sevillano
was very surprised because Ramon was educated in school and would
not believe in the legend of the Manta Diablo. The Sevillano gave
Ramon a choice to stay on the island or to get back into the boat
with him. Ramon went with the Sevillano. |

16 |
| Ramon
and the Sevillano were paddling out to sea. Ramon wants to return
the black pearl to the Manta Diablo, but the Sevillano wants to fight
the manta to the death. The Manta Diablo circles the boat and slaps
the water with its mighty wings. They disagreed about whether or not
the manta was the Manta Diablo. The two enemies tried to paddle away
from the manta, but it keeps up easily. |
| Chapter
17 |
| Every
time the manta circles the boat it comes closer and closer. The manta
was not afraid of the Sevillano even though he threw harpoons at the
manta. Finally the harpoon hits the manta and the manta starts to
swim away. The boat was carried with the manta for many hours. The
Sevillano decides to attack the manta with his knife and jumps onto
the mantas back. The manta did not stop swimming or pay any attention
to the Sevillano as he crawled up on his back. When the Sevillano
stabbed the manta it decided to dive deep into the water. The Sevillano
disappeared with the Manta Diablo into the deep sea. |

18 |
| Ramon
returns to La Paz early in the morning after the Manta Diablo disappeared
with the Sevillano. He quietly entered his home trying not to let
anyone see that he was home. Ramon tried to think of a way to tell
his mother what had happened as he walked from the beach to his home.
