1. How do you know that Ramon was not afraid of the Manta Diablo even after he entered the lagoon? (He was not afraid because he figured that the Manta Diablo knew that he was going to give the pearl back.)
2. Ramon heard a noise behind him. Explain how he felt when he heard the Sevillano's voice. (He was frightened and knew that the Sevillano wanted to kill him and take the pearl.)
3. What do you think that the Sevillano meant when he said, "You toss it to the devil and the devil picks it up?". (He meant that he thought that he was the same as the Manta Diablo. They were both the devil.)
Chapter 14
1. Why did the Sevillano say he did not want Ramon to take the tiller while he slept?
(He did not trust Ramon. He thought he would steer the boat back toward the shore.)
2. How did Ramon's mother describe the Manta Diablo to Ramon?
(She said the Manta Diablo had 7 rows of teeth on the bottom and none on top. She also said that the Manta Diablo could change and come on shore.)
3. What happened to make the Sevillano steer the boat toward the Isla de los Muertos? (The Manta Diablo kept circling the boat in smaller and smaller circles. Finally, the boat was rocking so hard that it almost sank.)
4 What does Isla de los Muertos mean? (It means Islans of the Dead.)
Chapter 15
1. Why did the Sevillano think that Ramon did not believe in the Manta Diablo?
(He had been to school and can read books. He did not think that a member of the Salazar family would believe in the legend of the Manta Diablo.)
2. Why did the Sevillano and Ramon suddenly leave Isla de los Muertos?
(Native Indians shouted at them and began to come and watch them. They became afraid.)
Chapter 16
1. Why did the Sevillano think that he could kill the Manta Diablo?
(He had alread killed 9 giant manta rays.)
2. Why do you think that Ramon just didn't attack the Sevillano?
(He knew that he was much smaller and weaker than the Sevillano and knew he couldn't win if he fought him.)
3. When did Ramon plan to take the pearl from the Sevillano?
(After the Manta Diablo came closer to the boat and the Sevillano would be distracted.)
Chapter 17
1. How did the Sevillano react when the Manta Diablo began to drag them toward the west? (He became restless, drew his knife, pulled the boat closer to the Manta Diablo and jumped onto the manta.)
2. How confident do you think that the Sevillano was about killing the Manta Diablo and survive?
(He was very confident. He had already killed 9 giant mantas, and he was a good strong swimmer.)
3. What do you think that Ramon was thinking about on his way home alone?
(Answers will be different. Will the Manta come and get me? Will the Sevillano survive and be angry because I left him out in the sea?)
Chapter 18
1. What did Ramon do with the Black Pearl when he reached the shore?
(He returned it to the Madonna statue in the church.)
2. Why did Ramon say that this was the day that he reached manhood?
(He had fought off the Sevillano and made it to shore safely. He had done things that were man-like.)
3. How would you tell Ramon to explain why he had been gone to his mother?
