Second Class View

From the Diary of:

Marie

I rolled out of bed this morning ready for a long day exploring the gargantuan ship Titanic. I absolutely love to read, so I wanted to go find the library. We left Southampton a couple of days ago. It is April 13, 1912. This ship is said to be “unsinkable,” but I don’t believe it. My birthday is in 3 days and I will be 14! I made a decision to eat breakfast before trying to find the library. I wandered to the dining saloon to find an exceptionally tasty breakfast waiting for me. I ate quickly, the whole time thinking of how on earth- I mean, on the ship how to get to the library. I then went off and quickly found it was very easy to get lost. I ended up at the door to the 2nd class smoke room and turned around right away. There were stairs in front of me, so I went up. I found the library at the top of the stairs. It was full of books and I went to work reading right away. I spent a good 3 hours in the library. I then went up on deck for an hour. I played with a boy and his spinning top. I walked a lady’s dog around a bit. She gave me some money for doing that little errand. The dog was a precious Schnauzer, and his name was Prince. I realized with a start I was late for my mid-day meal! I rushed back down into the ship and- still a little lost- dashed to the dining saloon. I went back to the library for a couple more hours, enjoying the peace and solitude. I dawdled back on deck and just stared first at the night sky, then down at the water. I ended up talking to a really kind 1st class passenger about her family and mine, about the weather, about the ship… you know, all the boring stuff adults normally talk about. The scary thing is I’m almost an adult! She said her name was Marianne and she was staying in one of the 1st class suites. I told her what room we were staying in and she said she needed to go back to her room. I was startled to realize that I had been on deck for over an hour!!! I walked to the purser’s office and asked for directions back to my room. He gave me a map for free and put an X on my room. I did end up going back to my room and writing all of this. I believe my first day on the Titanic was fabulous! Oops, my mom is telling me to go to bed!
