Rescue and Prevention

The Titanic sent out a distress signal- CQD- just before in sank. The nearby ship, Carpathia, received this signal. Once the ship got to the wreckage scene, mostly what they found in the water was bodies and debris. Some of the people in the water were alive, but not many. Most probably got hypothermia from the cold water and cold air and died. They also found a few lifeboats with some of the survivors. About 700 people were saved from the wreckage, water and lifeboats. Could this disaster have been prevented? The so-called “water tight” doors were not really water tight. The tops of the doors didn’t connect with the ceiling. When water entered the 1st compartment, it spilled over the tops of the doors, which were already shut, and just went from one compartment to the next. The water’s weight made the bow go down first, then the stern. Some people were rescued by the Carpathia, but most of the people on board the Titanic that fateful night died. Another reason they hit the iceberg may have been going very fast, trying to break the Olympia’s speed record. It was also a moonless night. In other words, they wouldn’t have been able to see the iceberg until it was too late. One more reason they ran into the giant ice cube may have been the fact that the water was dead calm, or no waves. No waves meant no water breaking at the foot of the ‘berg. This disaster might have been prevented but almost everyone thought of the Titanic as unsinkable…
