One day Persephone ( maiden name core) had went to pick flowers in the meadow.  Then Hades ( Pluto)  God of the underworld saw Persephone and had to her his wife.  So he kidnapped her to make her his bride.  When he came from the underworld he made a hole in the ground.  Then when he went back down animals fell in the hole.  When Persephone's mother Demeter heard what happened she was full of anger so she let her anger out on the Earth.  While Persephone was gone Demeter made flowers wilt, trees lose their leaves, and made fields grow cold and barren When Persephone got to the underworld she was crowned queen.  Demeter made everything on Earth impossible to live.  People could not plow through the icy ground.  Fruit and vegetables could not grow.  Zeus begged Demeter to let the Earth bloom. She refused until she got her daughter back.  So Hades was forced to let his queen go, but she had eaten Pomegranate seeds that Ascalaphus the gardener had given her.  Since she had eaten the food of the dead she must stay in the underworld for 1 month for each seed she had eaten.  She had eaten 6 seeds so she had to stay for 6 months.

This story explains the seasons because when Persephone was gone it was usually cold (winter) when she got back (spring) while she stayed (summer) before she left (fall).
