The golden gate bridge is located in the middle of San Francisco bay. It was realized the golden gate needed a bridge when San Francisco was a gold rush town. The bridge spans about 4200 ft. over the bay. The towers that hold up the three-foot in diameter cables are 220 feet over the bay. There is an elevator built for one person to go up to the top of the towers. The bridge was designed by Irving F. Morrow. The bridge opened on may 27, 1937 with a massive pedestrian crossing.
