Appearance Zebras are very much like a horse in shape. They have a very large difference though. Zebras are white or beige with dark stripes. Another difference is that the zebra is much smaller. Only 4 feet to the shoulder is a zebra's height and it only weighs 500 to 600 pounds. They also have a long black mane that goes on their back. Adaptations Zebras have ways to help from danger or when something is needed. Because zebras are prey to other animals, zebras have great hearing and vision to locate predators. All zebras have different stripes. Zebras can find a specific zebra with their stripes. When there is danger near, a zebra will "call" for warning to the others. Also, mothers will "call" to find their babies. Behavior When Zebras are chased by a predator, they can run up to 40 miles per hour. Zebras live in herds, sometimes. They also join herds with animals of antelopes, wildebeest, or ostriches. When a baby foal is born, only one is born in the spring. Diet Zebras are herbivores. Their diet varies though. The menu they select upon is red oat grass, leaves, bark, roots, shrubs and stems. |
