Selkies

Appearance

Selkies are known to look like seals. They have smooth silky fur coats, that are usually brown or black. Female selkies can remove skin, which will then reveal a beautiful maiden. Some people may have different opinions on a selkie’s appearence.

Actions and Behavior

Most selkies are known to be enchanting, but a little shy. The shy and enchanting ones are usually females. The males, on the other hand, upturn boats and raise storms to prevent the slaughter of seals and selkies. It is also known that if a male human captures a female selkie’s skin, that female will become his wife. Selkies act very much like mermaids, and they always find their way back home.

Theorys and Myths

Some people believe that there is a kingdom and king of selkies, and that female selkies can only take human form on certain nights of the year such as Halloween, Daylight Savings Time, and Midsummers Eve. There is a myth called "The Selkie that Dued No’ Forget" that is about a fisherman who comes across a woman (selkie) giving birth to her pups. The fisherman was going to steal the pups to sell their skin, but couldn’t because of the pain shown on the face of the mother. Many years later, when the fisherman was cut off land and set afloat by the raging tides, the same female selkie saved his life in return.
