Appearance

The whooping crane is 5 feet tall. It has long legs and a long neck. It is white with black tipped wings and a patch of bare red skin on its head.


Range

These birds are found between Louisiana and Canada.

 


Habitat

They prefer marshy areas.

 


Food/Diet

The whooping crane likes to eat clams, crabs, and crawfish.

 

 


Breeding

They breed in marshy areas. Whooping cranes make nests out of plants and twigs for the female to lay 2 eggs in.

 


 

Status

This animal began to die out in the 1800’s. There were only 15 remaining in a flock that migrates to Canada. Another six whoopers lived in Louisiana but they died out by 1948.
