Appearance
Males can be up to 7 feet in length and weigh only 100-160 pounds. Now females are a different story, their full size is only 6 feet and can weigh up to 100 pounds. We know that panthers have a coat of black, black and black fur, but this panther is special their color can be a light brown.
Range
Since the panther is called the Florida panther it lives in southern Florida.
Panthers just love the forested wilderness with fertile ground.
Food/Diet
The animals that they live on are the white tailed deer, feral hogs, small alligators, and rodents. The prey the panther prefers is the white tailed deer or feral hog. A huge carcass is consumed over a period of time. Grown males need about 3,000 calories daily while growing female kittens need 8,000 calories but the pregnant females need 31,000 daily.
Breeding
The breeding age is 2-3 years old. They can breed anytime of the year although most of them do it during October through March. Usually their gestation period is 92-96 days. There is a litter of 1-3 kittens every 2 years. Kittens are born blind having spots on their coats and the eyes are blue once they open.
Status
We all know that the panther is nearly extinct!!! Now hopefully it is making a comeback, because it is the state animal and it has protection from the government.
