Appearance

The desert tortoise can grow up to 15 inches and their color is usually a brownish.
 
 


Range

This amphibian lives in the Mojave & Sonoran desert of southeastern California, southern Nevada, and south through Arizona and New Mexico.


Habitat

Usually the tortoise lives in dry, hot areas where there is very little rainfall (deserts). They can have very many different habitats.


Food/Diet

It eats all of the low growing plants. The desert tortoise can live for long periods of time without food.


Breeding

Tortoise's population grows very slowly because of their reproductive system. They don't breed until around 15-20 years old. When they do breed they will lay clutches of eggs but only 2-3 will survive out of 160.]


Status

They are still endangered but are growing back slowly but surely for the government now have put full protection on them.
