BOBCAT











Appearance

Bobcats are about 2 feet tall and weigh 20 pounds. The fur coats are usually a light brown to a reddish brown. When they are babies they have have spots on their coats, but the spots fade as they grow older. Their tails are 3-7 inches.


Range

They are found in Central Mexico.


Habitat

Bobcats prefer woody or grassy areas. They stake their territory from 5-50 miles.


Food/Diet

Bobcats like a variety of meat such as rabbits, rats, squirrels, birds nesting on the ground, turkeys, and maybe even small or ill deer. They will also kill and eat lambs or chickens. Bobcats can only eat 3 pounds at a time. They will cover up the rest of the meat until they are hungry again.
 
 
 
 


Breeding

When bobcats have babies the mother has to find a dry den to stay in. The mother nurses them until they are about 2 months old when they can live on their own. Gestation period is quite a while.


Status

Very endangered with an estimated 725,000 left in 1980.
