Fast Facts about Skating

World Book. 2000 ed.

Here are some things that you need to know about figure skating! Women's individual competitions require skaters to perform a short program and a long program, also known as the"free skate." In the short program, which counts for one third of the total score, skaters must perform eight technical elements- including prescribed jumps, spins, and a little footwork sequence, within 2 min. 40 sec.! The long program, which lasts 4 min, incorporates both technical and artistic elements and accounts for the remaining two-thirds of the final score! There are no required elements in the long programs! In figure skating you must be very athletic.
