Blue Whale

Habitat: Mainly in very cold waters, like the Arctic and Antarctic waters.

Size: They average about 85 feet long, but the largest blue whales can be as much as 100 feet long. They weigh between 175,000-285,000 pounds.

Diet: They eat primarily plankton. In the Arctic they eat three different kinds of shelled plankton. The Arctic and Antarctic waters have up to 20 times more plankton living in them than other warmer waters.

Why endangered: Because the blue whale is so huge, they were a target for human's who were whaling, especially in the Antarctic. In one year alone (1930-1931) over 30,000 blue whales were killed in the Antarctic.

Fast Facts: Blue whales are mammals. The biggest blue whale was 102 feet long! Whales have to come to the surface to breathe.
