Ranks

King: The highest rank was that of the king. The king ruled the land around the castle. Some kings of the medieval ages thought they had absoulute power over their subjects, which had been given to them by God. Sometimes, this led to bad behavior and could lead to arrogant gestures and ultimately, disaster.

Lord: The knights work for the Lord. The Lords held a number of manors and some were very powerful men. When a lord was away from his manor, the bailiff looked after the manor.

Page: The first step to becoming a knight. When a boy was about 7, he was sent to live with a nobleman. He learned how to ride and how to behave. He was trained to wait on the noble ladies and how to serve a knight.

Squire: At the age of 14 a Page was apprenticed to a knight. The word Squire comes from a French word which means shield bearer. A Squire was taught how to use weapons and how to look after his knight's armor and horses. He learned how to carve meat for food and how to shoot a bow. A Squire would even go into battle with the knight.

Knights: A Squire became a knight at a ceremony called dubbing. Dubbing is when a knight is tapped on the shoulder with a sword by another knight or the king. They wear a helmet with a visor so that they can see out and not get hit. Gorget plates hooked to the bevor protect the knight's throat. There were small plates on the gauntlets which would give freedom to move the hands. Reinforcing breast plates were attached to the breast plate to give more protection against firearms. The knight protects the king.
