The novel HOLES, by Louis Sacher, takes place in a desert in Texas. Here is a partial summary of the book. We want to tell you a little bit about the book and not give the good parts (they are all good, so this is hard!) or the end away.

This story takes place out in the desert in a boy's juvenile detention center.  It is called Camp Green Lake, but there is only desert because the lake has been dry for over a hundred years. HOLES is a story about  bad luck, legends, treasure, yellow
spotted lizards, onions, and the importance of friends.
Stanley Yelnats' family and decsendents have been cursed with bad luck because of his great-great grandfather, his " no - good - dirty - rotten - pig - stealing - great - great - grandfather ".  Did it all start when Kissin’ Kate Barlowe held up and robbed his great-great grandfather? Will the Yelnat's family luck ever change?
It is not surprising that when  a famous baseball player's shoes fall out of the sky that Stanley is accused of stealing them.  When  he is sent to a detention camp instead of jail, his life changes bitterly. At Camp Green Lake (the detention camp) , you have to get up at four o'clock in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day.
Then, the Warden makes you dig a hole five feet wide and five feet deep to "build character". It is supposed to help the boys “build character”, but rumour has it that there is a treasure involved.  Stanley is given the name "Caveman" by the other "campers". As Stanley gets used to his new surroundings and his new name, he also makes a new friend named " Zero". When Zero runs away, Stanley runs after him.

Does Stanley find Zero? Can they survive? Remember, the nearest water hole is over one hundred miles away. To find out what happens next, READ THE BOOK!!!
