Ponds

In the pond tank you will see a lot of algae and waater plants.  They cover the entire surface of the tank.  There are a few hanging tubs inside the tank which hold larger plants growing in dirt or water.  These are places that insects can enjoy.  The water is almost clear but it is also brown.  Frogs love this pond ecosystem.  When the frogs are sleeping they look dead - they just float with their arms and legs outstretched.

Ponds are small bodies of water.  They are not very deep, so sunlight reaches the bottom.  They have muddy and sandy, usually mucky bottoms.   This helps water plants and algae grow.  Fish and other water animals and organism feed on the plants and algae.  Sometimes ponds turn green in the summer if they are covered in algae. Ponds can dry up in the summer and freeze in the winter.  Ponds were formed in various ways - by glaciers, by streams, by springs and rivers, or by people.  Ponds have vegetation growing around them.
Worms, fiddler crabs, frogs, snails and small fish live in ponds.
