George W. Vanderbilt



George Vanderbilt was born in 1862. And like Gifford, he was interested in forestry by college. He then built the famous Biltmore House near Asheville, North Carolina. Here he conducted agriculture and forestry experiments.

Vanderbilt opened his estate on Chistmas Eve of 1895. It was amazing. The mansion had 250 rooms. There were 34 master bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 3 kitchens, an indoor pool, and 65 fireplaces. The estate provided people who stayed there food, fun, and warmth.

George married Edith Stuyvesan in 1898. They went to Europe for their honeymoon and then returned to the Biltmore Estate to live.  There, they had their only child Cornelia Vanderbilt who was born and grew up on the Biltmore Estate.
