History of Student Opera Companies
Years ago in New York City the New York Metropolitian Opera Co. instituted a program that would educate teachers on ways to teach children how to write and produce their own original kid written operetta at their school. The project is fun and educational, too. The opera program is supervised by teachers but run by kids.

Six years ago two classroom teachers and the music teacher from our school attended the special training offered by the New York Metropolian Opera Guild's Creating Original Opera Program to learn the process needed for them to supervise the children in their classes so they could put on their own operetta. An operetta is both singing and speaking. Doing the operetta would be easier since it wouldn't take as much music. The difference between an operetta and a musical it that in an opretta the songs are a vital part of the show. The difference between an operetta and an opera is that an opera is entirely singing, an operetta is not. What knowledge the brought back with them! The kids operettas were amazing! It was like a real professional opretta- by kids! This years operetta, Gotcha was awesome! The actors remembered their lines, the costumes were great, the lighting was perfect and the set changes went smoothly. The Best of the Best Kids Opera Co. is really a professional company.
