Nickname: Old Rough and Ready

Zachary Taylor was our 12th president. He received little formal schooling. Zachary Taylor was a Mexican War hero and he served in the Black Hawk War in 1832 and the Seminole Wars in 1837. As president, Taylor supported the admission of California to United States as a non slave state. He died while in office.

13. Millard Fillmore

Nickname:Last of the Whigs

Millard Fillmore was our 13th president. He taught in country schools and was a lawyer. He was also a New York State legislator, Congressman, and worked to settle a dispute over slavery in newly settled territories. Millard Filmore supported the Union during the Civil War and thought that the whole war was unnecessary.

14. Franklin Pierce

Nickname:Handsome Frank

Franklin Pierce was our 14th president. He was a lawyer and he served in the Mexican War. He was a Congressman and Senator. As President, Franklin Pierce signed the "Kansas-Nebraska Act", which placed slavery under local rather than national law. He was also responsible for extending the US southern border.

15. James Buchanan

James Buchanan was our 15th president. He had served in the War of 1812. He was a Congressman, minister to Russia and Britain, aSenator, and Secretary of State.

16. Abraham Lincoln

Nickname:Honest Abe

Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president. He was a lawyer, an Illinois State Legislator, congressman, and he was President during the Civil War. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves. He was considered to be very honest, which is how he got his nickname. He was assassinated shortly after the end of the Civil War.

17. Andrew Johnson

Nickname:Tennessee Taylor

Andrew Johnson was our 17th president. He didn't learn to read and write until he was fourteen. As a child his mother sent him to be an apprentice to a tailor. He was a tailor, congressman, Governor of Tennessee,and Senator. After the Civil he got in a strong disagreement about the Reconstruction of the country that he was impeached. When he was tried before the US Senate they were one vote short of convicting him.

18. Ulysses S. Grant

Nickname:Uncle Sam

Ulysses S. Grant was our 18th president. He served in the Mexican War, and he was the Commander of Union forces in the Civil War. As President Grant supported the 15th Amendment, which promised black men the right to vote.

19. Rutherford B. Hayes

Nickname:His Fraudulency

Rutherford B. Hayes was our 19th president. He served in the Civil War, was a congressman, Governor of Ohio, and he won the presidency in a disputed election. As president he ended the Northern troop occupation of Southern states, which ended the Reconstruction period.

20. James A. Garfield

Born: November 1831, Ohio Died: September 1881, New Jersey

Vice President: Chester A. Arthur Party: Republican

Term: March 4, 1881- September 19, 1881

Nickname: Preacher President

James A. Garfield was our 20th president. He served in the Civil War. As president he fought against “spoils system”. President Garfield was shot only four months after he was put into office. Doctors tried to remove the bullet but weren't successful and he died a few months later.

21. Chester A. Arthur

Born: October 1829, Vermont Died: November 1886, New York

Term: September 20, 1881- March 4, 1885

Nickname: Elegant Arthur

Chester A. Arthur was our 21st president. He served in the Civil War, and began rebuilding the US Navy. Chester Arthur was known for defending blacks in civil- rights cases.
