A Classroom Debate

In recent years, more juveniles (those under age 18) are being tried as adults when they commit adult crimes. What do you think about this? Hold a classroom debate on the following proposition:

Resolved, that juveniles should be tried as adults when they commit adult crimes.

Here's how to hold the debate:
  1. Choose two teams, each with two team members. One team will support the proposition (the affirmative team). The other team will oppose the proposition (the negative team.)
  2. First, one member of the affirmative team will speak for 4 minutes without interruption.
  3. Next, one member of the negative team will speak for the same amount of time.
  4. Then the other member of the negative team will make a rebuttal statement for 2 minutes in response to the affirmative team's argument.
  5. Then the other member of the affirmative team will do the same against the negative team's argument.
  6. The process will then repeat with the second team members from each team making 4 minute statements, followed by rebuttal statements from the first team members.
  7. The audience will then have 10 minutes to ask questions of both teams.
  8. Each team will then have 1 minute to make a closing statement.
  9. The audience will vote to determine which team won the debate.
Here are some guidelines to help the audience decide the winner:
How well did the speakers communicate their ideas?
How much information did the speakers know about their topic?
Were the team members polite?
Did the second speaker on each team build on what the first team member had said?
Before you debate an issue, you need to learn about it. Here's a link to help you:
