Sunken Rock Lighthouse

Sunken Rock Lighthouse is located on Bush Island, near Alexandria Bay. The octagonal brick light tower marks the east entrance to the Narrow between Wellesley Island and the New York mainland in the middle of the channel. The lighthouse is used as a buoy for the ships so they can see where the shoal is at night or daytime. You can only get to Sunken Rock Lighthouse by boat. Upstream from Sunken Rock Lighthouse was one of the major shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. On November 20, 1974, the Roy A. Jodrey, a 640 foot ship, hit Pullman shoal off of Alexandria Bay. It sank to the bottom and remains there, about 250 feet below the surface of the water. Sunken Rock lighthouse is one of the smallest islands on the St. Lawrence River. The St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation currently owns Sunken Rock Lighthouse.
