History

What if there was a very secure prison on island in the San Francisco Bay named Alcatraz? Well there is a great site named Alcatraz and it was built in the year of 1854.
Alcatraz was founded by a Spanish explorer named Manual de Ayala. Alcatraz means pelican in Spanish.  When Alcatraz was founded by the Spanish explorer Manual de Ayala there were only birds on the island.
The great island was used to serve as a military prison in the 1850’s. Alcatraz had mounted 111 cannons and some rifle cannons were placed on the island in the 1860’s that made the island the strongest military site on the western coast. The military started to take over Alcatraz and used it for bad prisoners in 1859. Decades started to roll by and they started to make more buildings to house up to 150 prisoners. Alcatraz was a federal prison from the year 1934 to 1963.
Native Americans started to take over Alcatraz to protest the Bureau Indian Affair. They had done this in the period 1969 to 1971. In this period of time a lot of stuff was destroyed. Amazingly the only thing left standing was the mess hall, the main block, and the lighthouse. The public was able to start to touring
Alcatraz in 1973. It has been toured for twenty-eight years. Alcatraz has a great amount of people visiting  each year. With an estimate of over a million visitors a year. People come to visit Alcatraz to see what an amazing federal prison!
