Tulum

Tulúm is located on the east coast of Yucat'an. Tul'um, unlike most Maya cities, was walled and fortified. The name Tul'um means ''walled. ''Tul'um was a seacoast fortress and port city for the vast trading empire the Maya established. At Tulúm, a small temple arch just frames the rising sun at Winter solstice.

Probably no more than five or six hundred people lived in Tulum, in houses on platforms. The main temple is a structure called the Castillo. Around the Castillo are plaster figures of winged gods.

On the walls of many of the temples there are large murals. The way Tulum was built makes many sure that it was once a busy native Mayan city.
