Palenque

Palenque stands at the foothills of the Chiapas highlands in Mexico. It was built as a portal to the underworld in the 8th century, where Maya kings might defeat the Lord Death and return in dreams and visions. In the observatory tower at the center of Palenque palace, small portals were aligned to enable the sighting of Venus throughout the year at its first appearance on the horizon. This was the signal to begin war.

In 1952, Alberto Ruz Lhuillier, an archeologist, discovered something wonderful. For almost four seasons, workers removed lots of earth away from a hidden staircase beneath the Temple of Inscriptions. Now they were 60 feet down, they were almost to the base of the pyramid. Ruz was wondering why the stairs were filled in and where it would lead him to. Now part of his question was answered . The answer was lying before his eyes. Skeletons of 5 or 6 people were on the ground. The reason they were there was probably because they were sacrificed to serve someone important in the afterlife.
