James "Cool Papa" Bell was said to be the fastest runner in baseball. Satchel Paige often told stories about him like, he could turn the light out and jump into bed before the light went off. Paige also claims that Bell hit a line drive between his legs, and was then hit in the back with the same line drive when he slid into second. Once, during a practice, Jesse Owens (possibly the fastest man in the world at that time) actually refused to race him. Bell retired at the age of 43, with a batting average of .429. Then, in 1974, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
