In the beginning, catchers wore no chest protectors or masks. In 1857, the ball was caught bare handed! You would think it hurt! Then, in 1870, catcher’s masks and mitts appeared. In the 1880’s, the chest protectors appeared, and in the early 1990’s, shin guards appeared. The early ones were made out of wood. Nowadays, the only position that has shin guards is catcher.
