Negro games attracted lots of
fans. The National Negro League attracted 400,000 fans in its first
season. They had BIG crowds at the beginning of the season,
such as 10,000 fans per game on weekends! In 1924, attendance averaged
about 50,000 fans per game. The six games in 1925 had about 3,000 per
game! So you can see that attendance dropped over the years. However, it
dropped dramatically after 1945, when Negroes got to play MLB. Since their
favorite players were going to MLB, they didn’t want to watch the ones
that didn’t get drafted. The NNL had lots of fans at the beginning of
the Leagues, but never got as many as the MLB games. For example, Satchel
Paige’s first MLB game attracted 51,013 people. Nowadays, normal games
(not All Stars, or World Series) with normal teams (such as the Kansas
City Royals) have about 25,000 fans each game.
