Mossflower

This is the second story that Brian Jacques has written, and the 3rd in chronological order. It is the story of Martin the Warrior’s first quest. Martin is captured by the Kotir soldiers. Gingivere and Lord Verdauga Greeneyes tell him that he will be kept prisoner in Kotir for a while. Lady Tsarmina is not content with these happenings. Tsarmina wants Martin to be killed and vents her temper by breaking Martin’s legendary battle sword. Martin vows to kill her. Verdauga is sick and Tsarmina puts poison in his medicine to kill him. She blames Gingivere, her brother, for his death.

This leaves Tsarmina at full command of Kotir. At the end of Winter, Martin gets a cell mate named Gonff. Gonff tells Martin of the Council of Resistance in Mossflower and that their headquarters is in the place where the ruler of Mossflower once lived. Martin and Gonff escape Kotir to be dragged through a river with otters and observe a fight between a pike and a giant water rat called Gloomer. Martin finds out that C.O.R.I.M. has an army of otters, squirrels and a badger. During an assalt on Kotir some mice come from Loamhedge Abbey saying that a sickness has driven them out.

During these assalts many good soldiers are lost the the C.O.R.I.M. badger named Bella of Brockhall decides that the woodlanders only hope is her father, Boar the Fighter, and her grandfather, Lord Brocktree. Martin, Gonff, and Dinny have to unravel riddles to find the map to Salamandastron where they hope their only chance, Boar the Fighter, still lives..

Slagar whose former name is Chickenhound, Son of Sela, is a slaver and has a score to settle with Redwall. He sneaks into the abbey and kidnaps Mattimeo, Sam, Tim, Tess and Cynthia. They are taking the Redwallers and other young ones including Auma, who Orlando the Axe is trying to save. The battle inside ends first. The combatants of the first battle go to help the woodlanders outside and Urgan Nagru is killed by Finnebar Galedeep. Galedeep also dies.
