Louis Braille was born in 1809 in France.

Louis Braille was the boy who invented books for the blind. Some people made fun of him. One day he decided that he wanted to read.

Louis was a blind French boy. He became blind at the age of three when he was in a serious accident which caused him to lose his sight. His early education was in a class with seeing students. He had to depend on his memory to keep up with his teachers’ lectures.

Later he studied in Paris at the National Institute for Blind Young, whose founder had developed text with large, raised writing. At the institute, Louis saw a demonstration by Charles Barbeir, an army officer. Barbeir used a military code for night communications. The code was made up of raised dots and dashes, but was too complicated for blind people to use.

When Louis was fifteen, he improved this army code, and then went on to teach it throughout his life.

Louis Braille died on January 6, 1852.
