Bubastsisis: City of the
Cat
Bubastisis is located in the southwest
portion of the Nile river delta. This city was dedicated to Cats.
Bubastis means "realm of the cat."The cat graveyard in Bubastisis is
where the largest collection of cat mummies were found, 30,000 to be
exact.
Once a year a great festival was held to
honor Baset. Baset is the cat goddesses of Ancient Egypt. She
protects cats. The festival lasted for three days. On the night of
the third day,one candle was lit inside the temple of Baset. Then the
light was spread around the town by deevotes. Prayers and hyms are
recited accompanied by incense. Bubastisis was destroyed by the
Persians in 350 B.C.; however it is still a place where cats journey
to the other realm.
